<image:title>Art Installations & Exhibitions - SOLITARY</image:title>
<image:caption>Program: Art Exhibition Location: Kuwait City Area: 150m2 Year: 2017 Status: Completed Parallel Studio embraces an artistic perspective that aims to deliver the notion and awareness through an interactive design method. The design idea aims to frustrate the visitor through the increased amount of repeated elements. The main structure built around black colored maze entices the beholder’s sense of solitude and loss while dimmed purple/ pinkish color stroke of light in the maze pathways increases frustration, inhibition, emotional claustrophobia, emasculation, physical weakness given colors psychological properties. Following this journey, visitors enter the “The Moment Room”. The distorted space, cladded with mirrored materials, creates with the visitor a sense of instability that further develops Alnafisi’s concept arising from the main purpose of emphasizing the detail oriented, Autistic individuals would perceive from repetitiveness. Within the maze you will face some dead-end spaces, which will act as stations to exhibit autistic art work. As the visitor walks through a hallway to repeat the journey of the maze he experiences solitude and loss time after time similar to autistic people which starts with a moment of silence followed by the feeling of repeated frustration once again when he interacts with people. The purpose of designing narrow pathways is to enhance the fear of the unknown and solitude. At the far end the exit of the maze faces the solitary art installation designed by Parallel studio. “Solitary” depicts a child who, from our perspective appears to be “withdrawn, socially awkward and different”. The design concept behind the repeated metal poles is translated by the repetitive characteristics of the autistic people with a lot of details in every metal pole. The construction method and the design process are very detailed with certain measurement and height; this is to alert people about how details oriented autistic kids tend to give to the community. The choice of materials comes with stain steel is to enhance the idea of how socially cold and withdrawn individuals are. The sound that stain and steel produce when you clash them together is disturbing enough. The sounds you hear are composed of multiple sound tracks all layered onto one another. Aziz Al Humaidhi tried to create a somewhat irritating and frustrating audio environment mimicking that of the autistic child. Amin Fari collaborated with Parallel Studio in a different side of sound work. Amin Fari set up a mobile studio to record the speeches of the participants of Solitary. He was consulted in presenting the sound piece in the exhibition space to supply the tools for recording and presenting the sound works with Parallel Studio. Here in Solitary’s exhibition the creative soul, Aysha AlNafisi, collaborates with the designers, Parallel Studio, who designed "the moment space" as part of the maze, to further develop Alnafisi’s concept, with the use of certain materials and space orientation. The concept arises for the main purpose of emphasizing on the detail oriented, repetitive notion Autistic people enact, and that transcends the Autistic individual into a whimsical world of finding themselves in something that they love doing. This is when they are referred to as being in a solitary state. AlNafisi would like to celebrate and highlight on how talented those individuals are and their ability to craft detailed work. This is showcased by taking images of the detailed work created by the autistic individual as a starting point and morphing it into what could be “the moment” where beautiful things are created. To further highlight that point she embeds her own style of superimposing visuals into a space by using projections. This allows the visitor to plunge into this world where autistic individuals repeatedly find themselves in, a place with familiarity. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Program // Exhibition Location // Dubai, Dubai Design Week Year // 2018 Status // Completed For a consecutive year, Parallel Studio embraces an artistic perspective that aims at combining artworks with social responsibility common concern in Dubai for Dubai Design Week 2018. “Solitary” depicts a child who, from our perspective appears to be “withdrawn, socially awkward and different”. The design concept behind the repeated metal poles is translated by the repetitive characteristics of the autistic people with a lot of details in every metal pole. The construction method and the design process are very detailed with certain measurements and height; this is to alert people about how details oriented autistic kids tend to give to the community. The choice of materials comes with stain steel is to enhance the idea of how socially cold and withdrawn individuals are. The sound that stains and steel produce when you clash them together is disturbing enough. The soundtracks are designed in a way that mimics what they hear is a lot of sound elements at once. The Capsule is a collaboration between Parallel Studio x Aysha Al Nafisi to emphasize the creativity of an autistic individual through light projections, that was extracted from the actual artwork by Mohammad Yaqoub a student at Kuwait Center for Autism. The sounds are composed of multiple soundtracks all layered onto one another. <image:caption>Program // Sculpture Location // Qatar Year // 2021 Status // Completed Three depictions of three elements: spiral, elevation and transparency. Journey, progress & constant growth are the main ingredients the spiral staircase includes to depict. All, the emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of our lives. Elevated in a spiral form, for the relativeness of us beings to it through our life journeys. Every turn around the pole represents the twists and turns, the ups and downs one must go through to get to the peak of any goal in life. The transparency is an indication of new awakenings, hope and fruitful opportunities. It shows openness in expressing oneself and acts as a reminder to complete the tasks that may be forgotten.</image:caption>

<image:title>Workshop Series - AL BAHAR RESIDENTIAL</image:title>
<image:caption>Program // Residential Location // Kuwait City, Shuwaikh residential Area // 1000 m2 Year // 2017 Status // Completed The project is located in residential Shuwaikh close to the center of Kuwait City. The site is situated between two pre-existing homes on the east and west. The south side of the plot is exposed to the main road, while the north side faces a quiet street adjacent to a neighborhood park. The main driving factors behind the house's design were the specific requirements set by the client. The first requirement was to have lots of open space and keep building enclosure close to 50% of the total area on the ground floor. The second requirement was the separation of public and private spaces. Parallel’s responded by creating two interlocking L's where one was the primary public used for entertaining guests and housing all the services while the other L was private. The interlocking L's create a barrier from the outside bustle of the city, creating a serene refuge in the central courtyard with large windows and balconies looking onto the float pool and an opportunity for stack ventilation. The third requirement was to accommodate and protect his cars from exposure and having separate designated spaces for his exotic cars and family cars. Parallel's input was to create two different garages where one was for his exotic cars that were more of display space, while the other garage was less extravagant and used primarily by the household. In addition, Kuwait's harsh climate played an important role in the design of the house. Shading devices in the form of contemporary parametrically designed mishrabiyas adorn the the the north and south facade to shade and create privacy. Long slender windows are used on the east and west facades to minimize solar exposure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Location // Mwanyany village // Tanzania - Zanzibar Category // Charity Project Area // 65 sqm Project Year // 2024 Awards // Monocle Design Awards- 2024 & A' DESIGN Awards and Competition - 2024 AGA KHAN nominated project // 2025 Mariam’s Library, is an educational resource center located in the remote village of Mwanyanya, Zanzibar, part of the firm’s Gives Program, represents a significant investment in both education and sustainability. The design of the library blends traditional Zanzibari architecture with a forward-thinking, eco-conscious approach. By prioritizing locally sourced and sustainable materials, the project not only respects the cultural heritage of the region but also minimizes its environmental footprint. According to Parallel Studio, nature itself was treated as an integral part of the design team. The natural surroundings influenced design decisions, helping to keep the project on track with its sustainability goals. The result is a beautifully crafted space that serves both as a learning hub and as a symbol of the studio's dedication to fostering global social responsibility. The opening of Mariam’s Library signals a hopeful future for the local community, providing access to much-needed educational resources in a setting that honors both culture and the environment. Parallel Studio’s effort exemplifies how architecture can act as a catalyst for positive change in underdeveloped regions.</image:caption>

<image:title>LEI WA LAKOM LIBRARY 25 // Tanzania, Zanzibar</image:title>
<image:caption>Location // Kazole Village // Tanzania - Zanzibar Category // CSR Project Area // 94.5 sqm Project Year // 2025 In Collaboration // Lei Wa Lakom, Zain Telecome, Best Al Yousifi & KEO Lei Wa Lakom Library is part of the Parallel Gives program, an architectural initiative that explores how small-scale, socially driven projects can generate long-term impact through thoughtful, context-responsive design. Situated in Kazole Village, Zanzibar, the library is conceived as a lightweight, climate-sensitive structure that prioritizes openness, adaptability, and human scale. The architectural language draws from Swahili principles of shaded spaces, cross-ventilation, and visual permeability, allowing the building to remain naturally comfortable while maintaining a strong relationship with its surroundings. Rather than separating inside from outside, the library blurs these boundaries, reinforcing a sense of belonging and accessibility. The envelope is defined by perforated opaque corrugated panels that filter daylight, creating a soft, ever-changing interior atmosphere while ensuring privacy, safety, and air circulation. This environmental approach is complemented by an integrated water feature, which holds cultural and symbolic significance within an Islamic tradition, where water is associated with life. Timber framing and exposed structural elements express material honesty and ease of construction, reflecting locally familiar building techniques. The roof form extends beyond the walls to provide shade and protection from heavy rainfall, reinforcing the building’s environmental responsiveness. Internally, the space is deliberately flexible and non-hierarchical. Low furniture, open floor areas, and adaptable zones support reading, learning, discussion, and communal activities particularly for children, allowing the library to function as both an educational and social space.</image:caption>
